Here's how moisturizers actually work
Moisturizers work with a combination of 4 types of ingredients:
- Humectants draw water into the skin to increase hydration
- Film formers create a light, flexible layer that slows immediate moisture evaporation
- Emollients soften the skin and help replace lost lipids, improving flexibility and comfort
- Occlusives sit on the surface of the skin to seal moisture in
In lighter formulas, such as gel moisturizers, humectants and film formers are often enough. They hydrate the skin and slow short-term moisture loss without adding weight, which works well in warm or humid weather or when skin is producing sufficient oil on its own. As conditions change—cold weather, dry air, wind, stress, or barrier disruption—this combination stops being enough. At that point, emollients become important to replace lost lipids, and occlusives are needed to seal everything in.
Which moisturizer is right for you?
- Skin feels comfortable, oily, or it’s warm → Lightweight Gel
- Skin feels tight, flaky, or it’s cold → Cream
- Skin feels rough or depleted → Add a facial oil
- Skin needs overnight repair → Sleeping pack
- Skin won’t hold moisture → Oil balm (last step)
Our lightweight gel moisturizers are built primarily from humectants and film formers, which draw water into the skin and slow immediate moisture loss without adding weight or heavy sealing.
Choose a gel moisturizer if your skin needs lightweight support, if you’re oily or combination-skinned, or if it’s warm and humid
Our cream moisturizers include medium-weight daily creams and richer barrier-repair formulas, designed to provide lasting hydration, lipid support, and skin comfort.
Choose a cream moisturizer if you naturally have normal to dry skin, or if you normally have oily skin but are in harsh and dry conditions.
Our facial oils are built on a skin-identical base of camellia japonica oil, allowing them to absorb quickly and integrate into the skin rather than sit on the surface.
Facial oils perform best when layered over humectant-rich products—such as hydrating toners, serums, or a gel moisturizer—so there is moisture in the skin for the oils to seal in and protect.
Choose a facial oil if your skin feels rough, tight, or depleted, if you want to increase comfort and flexibility.
Sleeping packs are thick, treatment-focused moisturizers built with the heaviest occlusives, designed to deeply hydrate the skin and seal in moisture overnight.
Choose a sleeping pack if your skin feels dehydrated despite regular moisturizing, if it becomes tight or flaky overnight, or if you’re dealing with barrier stress from weather, exfoliation, or long days.
Sabbatical oil balms have a thick, cushioned gel texture that melts into an oil on contact and is intentionally formulated to remain on the skin for an extended period of time.
These are the strongest occlusive products we formulate and do best with another gel or cream below.
Choose an oil balm when your skin needs maximum protection, when conditions are harsh, or when you want a long-lasting seal to support barrier repair.
