Snail Serum

  • Snail mucin - or that icky gross juice that snails excrete when they climb over rocks and branches - actually has magical skin-healing properties that can give you a glow like nothing else. While the popularization of snail in skincare is commonly attributed to developments in Korean beauty, the discovery actually comes from the Chilean snail farming industry, when in the 1980s they discovered that their workers, whose arms and hands got easily cut while handling the sharp metal cages for the snails, experienced quick and no-scar healing when they applied snail slime to their injuries.

The magic chemical properties of snail slime come from its particular composition of glycosaminoglycans and peptides. Snail secretion filtrate is naturally rich in glycosaminoglycans. Glycosaminoglycans are so magical because they can bind nearly 1000 times their weight in water (hyaluronic acid is one of these naturally occurring glycosaminoglycans in your dermis). This moisture buffer is necessary to protect the parts of the cell that contribute to collagen and elastin, which are necessary for elastic, bouncy, smooth, ‘chok-chok’ skin. So, more glycosaminoglycans, more chok-chok skin.

Want to read more about the science behind why snail mucin helps your skin so much? Read our blog post on snail mucin, in which Adeline summarizes for you hours of research they've conducted on peer reviewed, scientific publications and patents in plain English.

The Sabbatical Beauty Snail Serum is 92% snail mucin, and is fragranced like fresh rain (because snails come out in the rain!) Our snail mucin comes from small family farms in France, where snails are not harmed in the extraction of their mucin. No actual snails are in this serum.

The best

My favorite serum. It smells divine, and a little of it goes a long way, so it lasts for awhile! My skin feels hydrated and smooth after applying. I love it!!! More snails, please.

SO much moisturizing

This was a gift as, I'll admit, I was a little weirded out by the idea of snail slime. But omigoodness, this stuff provides so much moisturizing, I am amazed. My skin feels so happy and fed applying this serum -- plump, calm, soothed. And, like all SB products, a little definitely goes a long way. I love it and will be adding to my regular routine.

Better than putting a slug on your face

Yet again another impulse buy. Okay, I know I have impulse buying issues. Stop judging me. I was crazy stupid excited about this serum. So very crazy, then it all went wrong.

Almost like it was fighting back, refusing to play nice with my skin. Then I heard talking about reducing the amount being used. That's when it started working out for me.

It's sticky if you use too much or apply it when the other serums are still "wet". Personally I can't use it in the summer, it doesn't like humidity. But it is great for less humid and cooler weather. Or you can use this as a evening treatment.

It's delicately scented, which is wonderful and so freaking versatile. I use it on my cheeks in winter, dab it on healing breakouts, dab a tiny amount in my upper eye lids. You can use on the lower eyelid, I used ony upper lids to help with crepey skin. Helps patched winter skin.
My face looks nourish when I use it regularly.💜

The secret sauce

I have been using this serum for about a year now and it has been a game changer in my nightly routine. I use a very mild retinol but I feel this serum is the key to why my skin looks and feels amazing! My skin always looks well hydrated and I have very minimal fine lines. I could not recommend this serum enough!

Bonus point- I was born and raised in Philly and I love the fact that I am supporting a small female owned business right where I was born! Get it girl!!!

Hi Nina,
It's so great to hear that your loving the Snail Serum! Using Snail Serum after a retinol sounds like a wonderful use and we're happy to hear that it's helping you achieve your skincare goals. - SB Team
