Meet Carol: One of Our Spring Box Reviewers! - Sabbatical Beauty

Hey Carol! We’re so thrilled to have you on as a Spring Box Reviewer! Could you start by telling us about yourself?

I am a full time teacher teaching teenagers aged 13-17. Also, I’m 38, and a mother of a 10 year old girl. Work wise, I’m trained to handle people in emotional distress when faced with crisis and unfortunate incidences. Hence, I hope like crazy my skills are never ever needed and I am never activated to head to any such scenes to console and help my students/colleagues return to normalcy when crisis happens. Other than that, I’m just a normal Mother Tongue Language teacher specialising in teaching Chinese Language.

Outside of work, I love to read and eat. Who doesn’t love masking while reading a good book and sipping coffee? Or wine? And due to my tendency to indulge in unhealthy food, my skin needs all the TLC I can give it!!!

Before SB (YES. I divide my existence into BSB and ASB), I have tried numerous brands, from drugstores to famous and expensive ones, but the more I tried, the more let down I was. After SB, I saw a change in my skin conditions and I hope this journey as a reviewer for the Spring Box is helpful for both myself and everyone following us to get one step closer to achieving our dream skin!

Awesome. Now could you tell us about your skin type, and the the conditions for spring for you?

I have dry skin that overcompensates the dryness by working overtime to ooze oil like a fountain. It used to be a constant quest to find the perfect cleanser that would not make my skin pull tight after I wash it. Barely a few hours later, my face will be shiny with an oily sheen. At the height of my ‘oiliness’, I can soak a few sheets of blotter at one go.

I also have overproduction of sebum, which leads to enlarged and clogged pores. I have so much blackheads across my nose my husband calls my nose a strawberry. The pores are also clogged and enlarged on my cheeks.

These days, I have issues with dark spots as I am obviously aging. The sun in Singapore is unforgiving, and I started on sunscreen too late, so I have a huge dark spot on my cheek and a smattering of smaller spots across my cheekbones and under my eyes. Other than the perpetual hot weather, it is also super humid throughout the year. There is only one season here, and that is hot and wet. All the way.

Great, now tell me about what SB products have worked, and have not worked for your skin, so hopefully some SB folk can find a “skin twin” in you!

I’m super glad to say that so far, I’m loving all the products that I’ve tried, but currently, these are my must-haves:

VCCO: Never ever imagined that an oily face would love more oil! True to its name, it vacuums gunk straight out from my pores! While I still have an abundance of blackheads, after one month or so into SB products, my pores are noticeably smaller and the blackheads are also gradually shrinking in size. It’s an amazing feeling to feel the hardened sebum dislodging as I massage my face with VCCO! Most importantly, it emulsifies easily when I rinse it off with warm water. There is no oily residual feel unlike other oil cleansers and I truly feel clean.

Rose Foaming Cleanser: I have never been a floral person. Still am not. Period. But somehow, I love the strange oat and rose scent this cleanser has. It is low pH, and when combined with VCCO or the cleansing balms, I really feel clean and pampered after every wash! These days, my bathroom is my sanctuary when I can indulge in my SB products.

Nourish Oil Mask: Basically, I am a sucker for anything that carries the scent of Nourish (Hello Sake and Rice! Hello Day Spa Body Wash!). I was truly skeptical and hesitated on adding a layer of oil onto my face to sit for at least 20 minutes. I got my first Nourish as an incentive from one of the parties (they are the bomb!) but I decided to try it. And was blown away. I loved the scent so much, I accidentally left it on for more than 40 minutes and when I went to massaged my face before washing, I got grits! That was the first time I ever felt anything being dissolved and removed from my face. Although this sounds disgusting, but massaging my face knowing all the gunk is coming out was actually kind of therapeutic! Most of the Nourish Oil would have been absorbed into my skin by then and whatever is left washes off easily without any oily residues. Love love love Nourish!

Unicorn Dreams Lip Scrub: Tastes like yummy cake. Works like a dream. I have super dry lips (kind of ironic compared to the rest of my skin) and lip balms from drugstores and expensive brands all do not work as well as one single scrub to slough off the dead skin. My lips are always smooth and sweet (yes, can’t help but end up tasting the scrub!) each time I use it!

Watch Carol and her adorable daughter Denise unbox the Spring Box!

We’re so excited to work with you! More soon!
