Adeline formulated and named this serum for her friend Carol who lives in hot, sunny, tropical Singapore. The Carol Serum is a powerful treatment to treat hyperpigmentation and age spots, while also balancing oil production and balancing your skin microbiome with numerous fermented ingredients.
Carol has oily/combination skin and one of her favorite products is the Sake & Rice Sleeping Pack, but cannot use it where she lives as it is too hot and humid. So Adeline formulated the Carol Serum with similar ingredients and tailored it to Carol's individual skin concerns and climates.
Ingredient Deep Dive:
🍶 3 types of rice (fermented rice, sake, hydrolyzed rice proteins) for intense brightening powers. Sake contains kojic acid, an essential element to fading dark spots and anti-aging, while fermented rice and hydrolyzed proteins are proteins that have been rendered small enough to penetrate deeper in your skin, thus having a more intense effect.
🍶 Fermented White Willow Bark: White Willow Bark is where the Beta Hydroxy Acid, Salicylic Acid is derived from. Fermenting the white willow bark predigests it so that the beta hydroxy acid is more easily absorbed into your skin, which regulates your oil production and may also contribute to reduced appearance of spots and scars.
🍶 Fermented Lemon Peel. Lemon peel is concentrated with antioxidants, which are celebrated brightening agents. Fermenting the lemon peel allows your skin to better absorb its good qualities
🍶 Niacinamide (vitamin B3) & N-Acetyl Glucosamine: This is a potent combination for lightening age spots and scars.
🍶 Panthenol (vitamin B5), maintains your healthy skin barrier so that it doesn't get too dry or too oily
🍶 Fermented Bamboo, for deep hydration and to improve serum texture

Love, love, love!
I've been using The Carol for over two-years. A little goes a long way! Since the pandemic, I stopped wearing make-up to hide my hyper pigmentation. The Carol has helped fade my old acne and electrolysis scars. My skin is brighter especially around my chin where most of my scars are located. What I love about it the most is it is not harsh. It does not sting or irritate my skin like some other products that have hydroquinone. I hope there is something that has taken its place!!!

Have been using this for the past year and it has SAVED my skin... Scars, discoloration, dark spots, you name it... A Sabbatical Beauty fan for life now. Please don't ever stop making this serum, it is a staple in my routine and I have thrown everything else out (except a few other SB goodies of course...)

This serum smells amazing. It is hydrating, brighthen and tightens my pores. In the summer i use it with coconut serum, it might feel a bit oily but surprisingly, it does well in summer heat. In the summer, coconut serum and sake a rice is all i need. With sake and rice, you don't have to worry about piling under sun screen. I also use it in the winter, with more serums. It is a staple in my SB collection.

I use Carol’s Sake & Rice at night after cleansing. I pat it on, let it soak in for about a minute and then apply my donkey milk over it. I wake up with smooth, nourished skin. I find it too sticky to wear during the day.

Worth it
This so far is the one SB product that I will likely repurchase when I am out. Also one of the very few that I even got in the full size. Age 40+ w/ start of nasolabial folds, loss of elasticity and collagen, some settling of 11's, horizontal forehead wrinkles. Skin was oily for most of my life and now settled into combination. For me, this serum has helped with skin brightening. I have a few products that seem to be helping me with that right now, so I'm not totally sure how much weight this one is pulling in itself, but I definitely attribute positive brightening to this product. I actually found more dramatic results with the pressed serum version, which I got in tester size, but sometimes the aloe base of the pressed serums seem to make me break out, so I'm not totally sure whether I will restock this or the pressed version when I run out. Assuming they still make this by then, as product seem to be discontinued with some frequency! I hope not this one or its pressed cousin.
